Steep and Deep
It is only 1,100 feet from rim to rim at Chasm View on the South Rim, while the Gunnison River is over 1,800 feet below. It is amazing to think about how long it took for wind and water to carve such a deep slash through solid rock. So little sun reaches the river that most plants struggle at the canyon bottom, which contains mostly boulders fallen from the vertical walls.
