Sand Swells

Dunes rise like massive ocean swells across the basin in this afternoon view north toward Cleveland Peak from Star Dune (the tallest dune at 750 feet). The hike to Star Dune was nearly eight miles round-trip, requiring about two hours for the hike to the top. There was no way to finesse the final approach; it was just a steep climb up the sheer side of the dune. Of course, a thick cloud bank rolled in as soon as I arrived, so by 5pm I gave up and headed back.
