A western burrowing owl perches at a prairie dog burrow near NPS-5 / Highland Ridge Road in Wind Cave National Park. I first spotted a pair of these owls at an old prairie dog burrow near the road one evening (owls often live in abandoned prairie dog burrows), and I was pretty sure it was the burrow where they were nesting. I returned early the next morning and found one adult at the burrow and another just exiting. Males and females look very similar so I wasn't sure which was which.
