Smoky Skies
Smoke from Canadian wildfires dulls an otherwise deep-blue sky behind the Needles in Custer State Park. The Needles were the original site proposed for the Mount Rushmore carvings. The location was rejected by the sculptor Gutzon Borglum because the Needles were poor quality granite and too thin to support the sculptures.
