While scouting CR-9, the vehicle in front of me stopped because the road ahead was filled with Black Angus cattle headed toward us, driven by mounted ranch hands. I quickly backed up to a wide spot in the road, grabbed my telephoto lens and stepped out to take pictures. The other vehicle struggled to back up but eventually reached me and parked. I stood in the road taking pictures. The cattle were still some distance away when a couple of the cows left the road and climbed into the bushes. At that, one of the cowboys hollered to “get out of the road!” I moved off to the side, but the cattle were still spooked and leaving the road. Then another cowboy hollered to “get in your vehicle!” I got into the truck but by then the damage was done. Quite a few cattle had left the road and the cowboys had to ride into the brush to herd them back to the road. An older man who probably was the owner gave me a really contemptuous look as he rode by, but how was I to know the cattle were so spooky? They should have sent a rider ahead to scout the road and warn drivers to pull over and stay in vehicles.
